Elliott explores the emotions of fatherhood in real time, having composed this new collection of solo piano pieces from time of anticipation in early ’23 to birth and beyond. From deep and meditative moments, to playful and whimsical waltzes Night Light is the perfect accompaniment for the journey of raising a child.

'Head Above The Clouds’ taken from the album and shared today, was one of the first tracks written for the album and captures the rush of elation Elliott felt on discovering the news that he and his partner were expecting.

“It’s about the overwhelming joy and excitement that lifted my spirits high,” he explains, “making me feel like I was floating above the clouds. It’s a moment of pure bliss and anticipation for the future. It takes me back to that moment, the joy and overwhelm of discovering I was going to be a dad.

“Becoming a father has been so transformative, so life changing. I started composing the music from January 2023 right up until June 2024. Spanning this long period, the process has felt incredibly authentic, as I’ve truly lived every moment of it. The album really has gone through the full journey and the little milestones along the way. There are many different, special moments in there.”

Elliott Jack Sansom grew up in Solihull, outside Birmingham where he started playing the piano by ear at the age of four. As a young boy with Asperger’s who struggled with emotions, Elliott sought calmness in the piano.

He studied at Birmingham Conservatoire where he graduated with the highest mark in the history of that course. He went on to be a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2016. In 2021 he took a swerve from cerebral jazz into the peaceful ambience of modern classical music – his track ‘Kaleidoscope’ reaching number one on Spotify’s Peaceful Piano playlist and remained on the chart for eight months.

Creating Night Light wasn’t just about writing an album. It was about capturing something deeply personal - something raw and real that could resonate with anyone who listens. In many ways, the album is a gift for my son, a musical document of this transformative chapter. But it’s also for anyone stepping into parenthood or simply for those who love to reflect with beautiful melodies.

What makes Night Light unique is the long period over which it took shape. The journey began in January 2023, when we found out we were expecting, and it continued well into the summer of 2024. I could have kept going - after all, fatherhood is a story that never really ends - but at some point, you have to let go (musically speaking haha). If I didn’t, you might be waiting 18 years for an 18 - part anthology about parenting, and that’s a bit ambitious (even for me!)…

The writing process was incredibly organic. I didn’t set out with a theme or a rigid structure in mind; instead, the music naturally mirrored the stages of fatherhood I was experiencing. Looking back on those early days of writing, it feels like I was trying to distill the essence of being alive into every note. The melodies are warm and intimate, designed to feel close to home, like I’m sitting at the piano right next to you. They weren’t about being perfect; they were about being authentic.
