Judith Weir's opera, commissioned by Glasgow District Council to celebrate the anniversary of the city's cultural recognition in 1990, is based on three Scottish folk
tales, all of which relate to disappearance: "Inheritance" tells the story of a runaway bride, a singing forest, and a lost sum of gold; "Disappearance" tells the story
of a man abducted by supernatural forces; and "The Stranger" is a story about a girl with an independent disposition who is courted by a sinister stranger.
In his works, Whip combines lush descriptive soundscapes with aerial choirs and Celtic folk melodies; the romanticism of the three stories
is offset by the sardonic humor and down-to-earth attitude of their main characters and the composer himself.
