Willie Nelson has always been punk rock. It's a point proven by a new version of "If You Want Me To Love You I Will," the tune he penned for actress Amy Irving to sing in his 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. Originally accompanied in the movie only by acoustic guitar, Irving gamely steps up as the volume knob twists to 11, Ramones-like guitars charge ahead, and police sirens blare. Irving, who was the singing voice of Jessica Rabbit, interprets nine additional songs of her pal Willie's on Always Will Be. The album's playfulness and determination to be eclectic is driven home by a smoky, saxophone-led version of "I Wish I Didn't Love You So"—penned by Frank Loesser in 1947 and memorably resurrected by Nelson on his 2013 album, Let's Face The Music and Dance. After the rocked up blast of the previous track, and with duet partner Steve Earle, Irving convincingly settles into a torch songstress mode. "Yesterday's Wine" becomes a full-band singalong, complete with punchy horns. "Everywhere I Go" from Nelson's 1998's Daniel Lanois-produced Teatro uses a mariachi trumpet and plucked string instruments. Nelson adds his blessing to this fond tribute in the form of a guitar solo on closer "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground." What's particularly satisfying in this stylistically varied collection is the inclusion of the work of other songwriters that Nelson exposed to wider audiences with his recordings. Steve Fromholz's "I'd Have To Be Crazy" is injected with a rhumba beat before closing with a solo by Henrique Cazes on the cavaquinho, a ukelele-like Portuguese stringed instrument. Recorded in Brooklyn, New York, at Spaceman Studios, Always Will Be is a collaboration between Irving, her son Gabriel Barreto, guitarist Tom Tierney, and frequent associates Goolis, an ensemble led by Jules David Bartkowski. A long list of orchestrators give the tracks a fuller body and unexpected twists but at the center of everything is Irving's voice, which is credible throughout. © Robert Baird
