Ida's 2020 album, Will You Find Me, felt like the end of an era. The mid-'90s indie pop scene they had been such a vital part of had become fractured and dissolute. Fellow travelers Tsunami (last album released in 1997), Seam (last album: 1998), Velocity Girl (1996), Spinanes (1998), and others were wrapping it up as the decade and century came to a close. Tastes change, of course, and the exploding emo scene and the nascent indie sleaze of fin de siècle Brooklyn was where eyes and ears were focused when Ida finished out a rapid run of four full-length albums in six years with Will You Find Me, released on Tiger Style Records after the band successfully got out of their contract with Capitol Records. The album should have been a footnote, documenting an atmospheric indie band wrapping up their affairs and preparing to move into whatever it is that indie rockers do after they get burnt by major label restructuring. Instead, with production assistance from Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive), Tony Lash (Heatmiser), and, perhaps most notably, Trina Shoemaker, who had just come off her Grammy-winning engineering work on Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions, Ida made a truly remarkable album that has only grown in stature over time. Their straddling of major-label professionalism (the band recorded in more than a dozen studios) and indie-minded integrity (the core songwriting duo of Daniel Littleton and Elizabeth Mitchell was working at an incredibly high level) created a collection that was delicate and beautiful but also inventive. That corporate music-biz largesse also meant that there was a lot of music recorded that never saw the light of day. The archivists at Numero Group are remedying that with this 25th anniversary edition that expands the original 14 songs with an additional 89 unreleased tracks. Ranging from outtakes, alternate mixes, and 4-track demos to radio performances, rehearsal versions, and various snippets and fragments of ideas, this set not only gives a sense of the effort and evolution that went into Will You Find Me, but also the range of stylistic ideas that the band folded into their sound. Whether it's the circular acoustic guitar figures of "Mark Eitzel on Windham Hill" (a title both perfect for and perfectly descriptive of this three-minute instrumental), the throbbing, noisy glitch of the "Brown Rice in a Magic Shop Dub" version of "Shotgun" that's as abstract as it is gorgeous, or a clutch of covers (Dylan, Loretta Lynn, Neil Young, and, surprisingly on-the-nose, Low) that clearly illustrate Littleton and Mitchell's songwriting goals, one can easily spot how all of this work came into play on Will You Find Me. © Jason Ferguson
