Releasing every track on the album, Spurious Forms has been an interesting exercise in marketing. Writing about all ten tracks as they are drip-fed out for public scrutiny, has been a heady and intoxicating affair. Usually, the job of the reviewer is to find the good (or bad, depending on the type of reviewer you are) in the music, explain it to the best of your ability, sell it to the public, and then, the moving hand having writ, moves on…as a wise man once said.
In this instance, the job has gone far beyond such a mundane task. With each single released, each note played, and each word written, I have taken a step further into a world she has created for those songs to exist in.
It is, poetically, a world built of broken hearts and unrequited love, emotional turmoil, loss, and longing. It is a world where people let you down, and truths are revealed through an individual’s actions. It is a place that looks inward, is intimate, and honest. Brutally so. It is a place where the heart and soul are king and queen, where the logic and rationality of the real world is something that will have to wait for the cold light of day. This is music made for the early hours of the morning, those pre-dawn bouts of deep thought and anxiety.
Musically, it is a place of shaded light and hushed confessions, where music is often pared down to its very essence, where abrasive textures sit alongside the most beautiful of tones, where ethereality and existential terror dance deftly together. In this place, opposites are oh-so attractive, and the light exists only to reveal the depth of the darkness. It is a place where apocalyptic blues weave their way through classical grace. Where ambiance and anthemics co-exist. Where less is not just more, it is crushingly and claustrophobically so.
I have avoided talking about individual songs; they can all be found elsewhere on this site, but also because such songs only seem to make sense in the context of the world that Elea Calvet has created.
Anyone can write a song. Most people can set an album to a concept. But no one builds whole new sonic planes of existence like Elea Calvet does on Spurious Forms.
