A new Bill Fox album is a rare event — and today is one of those days.
The Cleveland singer-songwriter and underground cult figure has always avoided the spotlight. In the 1980s, he fronted the band The Mice, which inspired many indie musicians, including Guided By Voices. He later left the band and disappeared from the scene, returning briefly in the late ’90s with two legendary lo-fi albums.
After long periods of silence and rare appearances, Fox released One Thought Revealed in 2012 — and vanished again. But now, 13 years later, he returns with a new album, Resonance, released by Cleveland’s Eleventh Hour Recording Company.
The album is in a lo-fi style: acoustic guitars, harmonica, sincere lyrics, and Fox’s vulnerable yet confident voice. You can hear echoes of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and what Bob Pollard and Elliott Smith appreciated in him. If you’re just starting to explore his music, Resonance is a great place to begin.
