The duo Malmin focuses on folk music from Suldal and Bjerkreim in Rogaland, drawing inspiration from archival recordings of the old masters. Some of the tunes are played as closely as possible to the original performers, while others are deliberately taken in new directions.
There is experimentation here, such as filtering some of the tunes through the jaw harp scale (natural scale) and old langeleik scales. The instruments used include traditional folk instruments like the Hardanger fiddle, regular fiddle, langeleik, and jaw harp, but also guitar and mandolin. The latter two have been set up with microtonal tuning to better reflect the tonality found in the archival recordings.
Anders Hana and Olav Christer Rossebø both have diverse musical backgrounds—Olav mainly in various folk music traditions, and Anders primarily in different jazz and rock groups.
