Mellotron Variations is a collaborative project by John Medeski, Pat Sansone, Jonathan Kirkscey, and Robby Grant. Initially conceived as Mellotron duets by Memphis musicians Kirkscey and Grant, the project expanded with the addition of Medeski and Sansone, creating cinematic, avant-garde compositions reminiscent of a surreal Kubrick film. The Mellotron, originally developed in 1963 in Birmingham, England, functions by pressing keys that play back tape recordings of real instruments. It gained popularity in the late ’60s and ’70s with artists like The Beatles, The Moody Blues, and King Crimson, before declining with the rise of digital synthesizers. Despite this, it saw a revival in the 1990s with bands like Radiohead and Oasis, leading to the resurrection of its original manufacturer.
