Mirco Mariani - MUSICA PER SCONOSCIUTI (2025)

MUSICA PER SCONOSCIUTI is the title of the triple CD by Mirco Mariani (Extraliscio, Saluti da Saturno, Mazapegul and much more) coming out for the angelica records and available in its complete version on the record label's Bandcamp page.

The music collected in MUSICA PER SCONOSCIUTI was all born inside the Labotron, Mariani's Bologna recording studio-laboratory from which all his creations originate, and is the result of a selection from over 400 tracks recorded by the author alone from 2021 to 2023.

MUSICA PER SCONOSCIUTI presents 158 tracks on 3 CDs (a total of 3 hours of music, with tracks ranging from 13 seconds to just over 3 minutes in length), for a kaleidoscope of styles in which sacred choirs, lopsided Latin rhythms, Residentian electronic nursery rhymes, Japanese new wave, twelve-tone orchestras, ghostly lounge music for deserted dance halls, bursts of primitive electronics worthy of the Barrons' Forbidden Planet, 50s jazz-exotica, horror hallucinations, nostalgic melodies for solo piano, etc., follow one another without interruption in a flow uninterrupted by suggestions that can make you think (more structurally than anything else) of the Italian “music for sound comments” series, of Eno’s Music for Films, of the English current of Hauntology (which is also soaked in references to library music, horror soundtracks, musique concrète).

Music produced with what Mariani calls Orchestrone (a circle of electronic, electromechanical, acoustic, tape and celluloid vinyl instruments, which together occupy 99 channels distributed in various mixers, conceived as a single large instrument), many of these pieces were born as “occasional music” for the cinema, for films by Elisabetta Sgarbi (Viaggio intorno alla mia stanza, about the photographer Nino Migliori), Pupi Avati (Lei mi parla ancora), Aleksandr Sokurov (Fairytale: Una fiaba), and for soundtracks for silent films commissioned by the Cineteca di Bologna – but also, Mariani declares, “for imaginative films that have always been going round in my head”.
