An Album Ahead of Its Time
In 1998, iconic Canadian singer-songwriter Lori Yates released Untogether — a bold departure from her alternative country roots into the world of trip-hop and atmospheric soundscapes. It was the second release on Virgin Music Canada, produced by Opium Concepts: Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Monster Truck, Arkells), Domenic Macri, and John Gilbert.
Although the album was “shelved” just weeks after its release due to internal restructuring at the label, Untogether remains a turning point in Yates’ artistic journey. It was here that she truly found her voice — both as a singer and a songwriter.
“Untogether was the moment I finally heard myself,” Lori says.
Already known in Canada as a pioneer of alternative country, Lori Yates pushed the boundaries of genre, anticipating trends and redefining expectations. Untogether blends emotional lyrics, electronic textures, and a deeply personal tone, crafting a unique atmosphere where light meets shadow, order meets chaos.
Legendary The Band member Rick Danko once said:
“Lori has that desperate Canadian sound.”
