This is volume 39 of the complete solo piano music of Liszt. Between 1842 and 1850 he arranged the Six Preludes and Fugues BWV543-548 originally written for organ. He made minimal amendments but the fugues made exceptionally virtuosic demands on the performer. In the case of the Fantasie and Fugue in G minor, BWV542 he employed considerably more elaboration. Bach had previously worked in Weimar so it could be said that Liszt was paying homage to his eminent predecessor. Liszt was also active in the reclamation and performance of Bach’s music. This volume is played by Suzanne Husson, who recorded the music of Manuel Martínez-Sobral on Marco Polo [8225014 and 8225188] of whom the American Record Guide wrote; her ‘transparent, polished pianism is perfect. An ideal interpreter.’
