Flug 8 & Khan Of Finland - Melt On The Beach
Sometimes it takes a while for new collaborations to take form. As is the case here with »Melt On The Beach« by Flug 8 alias Daniel Herrmann and Khan Of Finland alias Can Oral. Both met nearly 25 years ago while contributing works for Playhouse back then: Daniel was asked by LARJ label boss Ata - back then busy running Playhouse - to contribute to the design of the first Captain Comatose album »Going Out«. Captain Comatose was a funky little project started by Can and musical friend Snax. The guys liked Daniel's works and thus never lost touch.
Fast forward 20 years later when a phone call started the idea of exchanging musical material between Frankfurt (Daniel's home back then) and Berlin (Can's home base) via the internet. Both wanted to experiment making music together without being in the same physical space — no problem in these times - but would it work?
At first a small collection of individual pieces emerged, gradually taking shape and evolving. That this could actually work surprised both. When Can spontaneously created a megamix, condensing all the material into two long tracks, both new it would work indeed.
The result right before your eyes and ears displays a super sonic journey — a journey full of character which was very important to Daniel and Can and which works better for them as if they had worked on individual tracks instead.
When both presented the finished work to Ata, they were excited that he immediately decided to release »Melt On The Beach« purely for the sake of their shared history. Ata, being the great connector that he is and being able to sprinkle some extra magic dust from the outside, suggested that Can's digital paintings should be used for the artwork - and thus everything came full circle!
So this is »Melt On The Beach«: An extravagant experimental excursion functioning as a simple ambient background as well as being exciting and challenging enough sound wise to not lull you into too much of a comfort zone. With each repeated listen you will discover more exciting sounds, fragments of speech, deep bass lines and other sonic surprises - an experience that will come to its full form when listening to the CD version and its nearly 36min megamix nonstop.
Now let's go to the beach and let's melt together!
