Internationally acclaimed violinist and composer Maria Manousaki returns with Behind Closed Doors, her third solo album and a powerful statement in contemporary world jazz. As a prominent female artist in the Greek jazz scene, Manousaki has carved out a distinct musical voice, blending the rich traditions of Cretan music with modern jazz and global influences.
This deeply personal album reflects themes of loss, sorrow, and rebirth, inspired by the natural transition from winter’s darkness to the renewal of spring. The title track was born during the first lockdown, as Manousaki returned to her hometown of Chania after years in the United States. This period of solitude and reflection sparked an intimate and emotional musical journey, bridging past and present.
Featuring five original orchestral compositions, a haunting reimagining of a Xylouris song performed by Stratis Skarakis, and an unexpected reinterpretation of The Cure, Behind Closed Doors showcases Manousaki’s ability to create a bold, cinematic, and emotionally charged soundscape centered around the violin.
Produced and co-arranged by her longtime collaborator Petros Klampanis—bassist, producer, and founder of PKmusik, who also produced her previous albums Hidden Trails and Sole Voyage—this record continues their shared vision of fusing tradition with innovation.
Performed by a stellar ensemble, including Dimitris Verdinoglou (piano), Michael Evdemon (bass), Alekos Roupas (percussion), and guests Thomas Meleteas (oud), Stratis Skarakis (vocals) and Kyriakos Stavrianoudakis (laouto) the album weaves sophisticated improvisation with the earthy, ancestral tones of Cretan music.
Behind Closed Doors is an album of contrasts—light and shadow, longing and resilience, tradition and innovation—all guided by Manousaki’s passionate violin and fearless artistry
