Tribute to an outstanding 20th century pianist: SERGIO FIORENTINO - The legacy "He is the only other pianist," said legendary Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli about Sergio Fiorentino. How is it that one of the greatest musical geniuses of the 20th century is still so unknown? Sergio Fiorentino (1927-1998) was a remarkable Italian pianist whose career combined extraordinary artistry with a silent, almost mysterious presence in the music world. Born in Naples, Fiorentino showed an extraordinary talent at a young age and studied at the renowned San Pietro a Majella Conservatory with Alfredo Casella and Paolo Denza. His early successes included wins of significant competitions and promising concert debuts that made him a rising star in the classical music scene in the mid-20th century. However, after a plane crash in 1954 that sustainably injured him physically and mentally, Fiorentino's career took a dramatic turn. He resumed his activity as a pianist, but only performed sporadically publicly and retired from the international stage. Fiorentino's recordings, which gained greater recognition in his later years, show a pianist of extraordinary depth, technical mastery and interpretive sensitivity. Known for his fondness for composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninow, Fiorentino's play was distinguished by its clarity, emotional intensity, and lack of effect ashaming. His interpretations were thoughtful and dispensed with self-staging in favor of profound musical communication. In the 1990s, Fiorentino returned to a more active recording activity, and with delay gained recognition as a cult figure among piano enthusiasts. Tragically, his life ended as early as 1998, but his legacy remains in the form of a treasure trove of recordings that continue to inspire listeners and solidify his status as one of the most distinguished pianists of the 20th century. The present edition covers most of Fiorentino's recordings, ranging from the 1950s to the Berlin studio recordings of the early 1990s. Some of these (live) recordings note their origin and technical shortcomings, but everywhere the incredible musical power of one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century shines through.
