Recently, a new album was released by the DUX record label – 'Forgotten Treasures of Polish Violin Music – Zapomniane Skarby Polskiej Muzyki Skrzypcowej' recorded by violinist Marek Polański and pianist Grzegorz Biegas.
The unique project, realized as part of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Scholarship that Marek Polański received for the year 2024, aims to promote unjustly forgotten Polish music. An extraordinarily important aspect is the fact that the recordings of works by Serwaczyński and Witwicki represent a world premiere recording.
Despite the unquestionable artistic value of the works by Józefowicz, Noskowski, Serwaczyński, and Witwicki, these pieces are not found in the repertoire of performing violinists.
Conversely, Grand Duo Polonais by the Wieniawski brothers appears in concert programs only sporadically. The artists decided to change this state of affairs by preparing a record album that aims to showcase the beauty and value of compositions by our native creators. The combination of youth with the experience of performers is a factor that guarantees a high level of performance and ensures the uniqueness of the project.
A manifestation of the artistic sensitivity of the musicians and an expression of solidarity with the Ukrainian Nation is the inclusion of the work – Chansonnette d’Ukraine op. 26 no. 2a by Zygmunt Noskowski in the program.
Sonata in D minor op. 12 by Michał Józefowicz is dedicated to Emil Młynarski, the then director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.
Lyrical, nostalgic, and at times Schumann-like dramatic Con molto passione, followed by the lyrical Andante maestoso e molto espressivo, characterized by a violin theme adorned with a dense texture of the piano, performing virtuosic figurations. The cycle concludes with Allegro maintained in the form of a lively, yet virtuosic krakowiak.
Three works by Stanisław Serwaczyński combine folk influences and the creator's inspirations with a virtuosic element. These extraordinarily effective works allow for the full display of instrumental skills of both the violinist and the pianist, combined with the sentimentality characteristic of the eastern borderlands, where the artistic activity of the composer was indeed focal.
Duo op. 19 by Józef Dominik Witwicki is a theme with variations, in which virtuosic parts in both instruments appear alternately. It concludes with a dance-like and spectacular finale.
The recital concludes with the extraordinarily virtuosic Grand Duo Polonais by Józef Wieniawski and his more famous brother – Henryk. It is based on two songs by Stanisław Moniuszko, the creator of Polish national opera – the dumka Kozak and one of the most poignant Moniuszko songs – Maciek. In the Finale, motifs from the Polonaise in G major from the once popular Russian opera Mogila Askolda by Alexei Verstovsky are utilized. This work, extremely demanding from a technical standpoint, showcases the entire spectrum of instrumental possibilities of both the violinist and the pianist. Daring scales, passages, large jumps, staccato, double stops, and chords are just some of the entire arsenal of 'delicacies' employed by composers to season this 'musical delicacy'.
