The much-anticipated follow-up to the Grammy-nominated, "The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Vol. 1"! Thirteen new instrumental tunes, plus five legacy covers of Hartford favorites--eighteen tracks, featuring forty-eight of your favorite acoustic artists!
All thirteen of the instrumental fiddle tunes on this album came from the book, John Hartford’s Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes, by Matt Combs, Katie Harford Hogue, and Greg Reish (StuffWorks Press, 2018). The 176 tunes from that book came from the sixty-eight music composition journals full of fiddle tunes that John kept between 1983 and 2001, and subsequently left to be discovered by his friends and family. Those journals are archived at the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University, in Murfreesboro, TN, and we owe them a special debt of gratitude for their time and efforts in preserving this collection.
“We want to do good things, and to further Dad‘s legacy by releasing his tunes into the ‘Fiddleverse’ to be recorded and played. We want this project to create community spaces and places for people to come and be active, and feel seen. And we want to support artists. The premise behind the Fiddle Tune Project is this: we choose an artist or group, we hand them a copy of John Hartford’s Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes and ask them to find the tune that speaks to them, and then we bring them into the studio to play that tune through their own filter. What is so incredible is that you hear these tunes played in so many different ways, and Dad comes through on every one of them–it’s like his DNA is embedded in the tune. And he didn’t limit himself in terms of composition, he worked with all sorts of styles and structures. Remember, these tunes came from his creative journals, where he was exploring and trying new things. There’s a lot of time, thought, and commitment to craft put into them, and I think attention needs to be brought to that. Dad’s fiddle music may not be as commercially known as his songwriting, but I think these instrumental recordings prove that he could say profound things without using words.”-Katie Harford Hogue
