The album Affenstunde by Popol Vuh, led by Florian Fricke, is a groundbreaking debut that blends Moog synthesizer and primitive percussion to create a meditative, otherworldly sound rooted in both ancient and futuristic realms. The album was conceived and recorded at der Roter Pfarrhof, a spiritually rich artistic retreat in West Germany, formerly owned by the aristocratic von Lehndorff family, whose history was marked by tragedy during WWII.
The album artwork—depicting transitions from dark exteriors to glowing interiors, and finally a river at twilight—symbolizes the album’s central theme: a journey from the outside, to the inside, and beyond. Influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Fricke used the Moog synthesizer to explore human consciousness, producing music that evokes elemental forces—earth, fire, water, and air—and transcendent states.
Side one, Ich Mache Einen Spiegel, is a three-part instrumental suite inspired by Aztec texts, moving through mysterious electronic landscapes and percussive awakenings. Side two, the title track Affenstunde (“Monkey Hour”), reflects the evolutionary leap from ape to human, unfolding as a transformative, improvised synthesis of rhythm and cosmic resonance.
Despite limited tools—a Moog and percussion—Fricke crafted a deeply philosophical, emotional, and sonically rich experience that stands as a visionary work of early electronic music.
