A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story is a powerful true crime drama portraying the tragic life of Ruth Ellis, the last woman executed in Britain. Set in the vibrant 1955 London club scene, the story follows Ruth’s rise as a young, glamorous club manager and her subsequent downfall through a volatile and abusive relationship with racing driver David Blakely. After she murders Blakely, Ruth is imprisoned, tried, and ultimately sentenced to death—highlighting a justice system that judged her for more than her crime.

The drama reveals deeper truths behind Ruth’s actions and the final attempts to save her from execution, which proved unsuccessful. Her case became a landmark moment in British legal history, prompting the introduction of Diminished Responsibility as a legal defense and contributing to the abolition of capital punishment in the UK. The story is adapted from Carol Ann Lee’s biography A Fine Day for Hanging and was brought to screen by Silverprint Pictures.

Original Soundtrack by Samuel Sim

Samuel Sim’s emotional and atmospheric score underpins Ruth’s descent from fleeting hope to despair. A recurring, unresolved rising melody symbolizes her diminishing chances of escape. The music evolves from delicate orchestration to disturbing, fractured textures—reflecting her psychological decline and inescapable fate.

Sim uses innovative sound manipulation techniques, distorting classical instruments to create a sense of disorientation. The score features vocals by Joanna Forbes-L’Estrange and cello by Caroline Dale, performed by The Chamber Orchestra of London at Abbey Road Studios.

The soundtrack is a poignant and haunting musical portrait of Ruth Ellis, capturing themes of injustice, fate, and lost hope.
