“Six Friends for Bicio” dedicated to saxophonist Maurizio Caldura Núñez

On Wednesday 21st, a project premiered at the BargaJazz Festival: “Six Friends for Bicio”, dedicated to saxophonist Maurizio Caldura Núñez, known as “Bicio”, who died prematurely in 1998 and was considered by many to be one of the most talented Italian saxophonists ever.

The ensemble was composed of Marcello Tonolo on piano, with whom “Bicio” had founded the “Thelonius Monk” music school, Giampaolo Casati on trumpet, Roberto Rossi on trombone, Michele Polga on tenor sax, Marcello Tonolo on piano, Marc Abrams on double bass and Enrico Smiderle on drums.

Maurizio Caldura Núñez (1959-1998) was an Italian jazz saxophonist known for his work with several notable jazz groups. He was a member of ensembles such as the Keptorchestra, the Matt Jazz Quintet, and the Maurizio Caldura Sextet. His musical contributions were highly regarded in the Italian jazz scene, particularly for his participation in the production of albums such as “Sharp Blues” with the Matt Jazz Quintet and “Static Energy” with his sextet.

Caldura’s sound was recognized for its expressive and dynamic style, and he collaborated with various renowned musicians throughout his career. His recordings, especially with the Keptorchestra, highlighted his ability to blend intricate sax lines with complex jazz compositions.

Despite his relatively short life, Caldura left a significant impact on the jazz community, remembered both for his talent and the emotion he brought to his performances. His legacy continues to be honored through tributes and dedicated concerts by musicians who respected his art.
