When French experimental pop duo UTO released their second album, When All You Want to Do Is Be the Fire Part of Fire, in March 2024, they solidified a genre-bending sound that expanded on the groundwork laid in their 2022 debut, Touch the Lock.
The follow-up album frequently examined the metaphor of “the outer diffusion zone of a flame—the hot, destructive part.” The album’s title was inspired by a lyric from legendary American singer-songwriter Bill Callahan’s 2007 track, “Sycamore,” symbolizing a bold exploration of all facets of the duo’s inventive electronica: from the fiery intensity to the moments of icy restraint.
On March 7, 2025, UTO will release More Heat to the Fire Part of Fire (MHTTFPOF), a five-track companion project that extends the sonic universe of its predecessor, presenting a luxurious expanded edition of the original album.
MHTTFPOF opens with Spy, a track inspired by Anaïs Nin’s A Spy in the House of Love. As the band explains: “‘Spy’ is about stalking, about the desire to know everything about someone and wanting to possess everything without limit [...] It plays on its politically incorrect side (‘I am a feeling you should fear’).” The song is an early 2000s-inspired bloghouse banger, perfect for both radio airwaves and sleazy dancefloors.
Following Spy is Secret Things, a delectable slice of dance-pop driven by Neysa’s saccharine vocal melodies and trance-like synth stabs. The duo also pays homage to their musical inspirations with two distinctive covers.
The first is White Flag, originally by Dido, a track that was a staple on MTV during their teenage years. UTO first performed this song during their inaugural TV appearance, and their version—a soothing downtempo pop rendition—offers a nostalgic nod to the '90s Brit Pop scene while providing a respite from the high energy of the earlier tracks.
The second cover, Broken Butterflies, a stripped-back guitar ballad originally by Lucinda Williams, is reimagined by UTO with voice and vocoder, transforming the pain in Lucinda’s lyrics into something ethereal through vaporous production.
The collection concludes with the “Demo Barn Version” of the Fire standout track Zombie. This intimate, lo-fi rendition strips the song down to harmonized vocals and acoustic guitar, showcasing UTO’s raw talent. Beneath their wild productions and experimental flair lies a mastery of songwriting, able to shine even in the most minimal arrangements.
With More Heat to the Fire Part of Fire, UTO continues to prove why they are one of the most exciting and innovative acts in the modern music scene. This release reaffirms their position as a band worthy of the hype—and so much more.
