When the drums kick in on opener, "Pay the Rent," Snapped Ankles makes it clear that their album title, Hard Times Furious Dancing, isn't just a clever turn of phrase. It's reflective of the all-in pace at which the cryptic U.K. post-punk band operate on their fourth studio record. Synth-driven beats and melodies couple with drumming to carry the load, giving the spoken-word-like vocals, which resemble a preacher delivering a fiery sermon, the freedom to meander—often pointing out the foibles of corporatism, government and, generally, the wayward human condition. On "Personal Responsibilities," Snapped Ankles explores the dichotomy of a corporate society that both fails its constituents and forces them to "eat unhealthily and kill animals unnaturally." That's possibly the most polite the lyrics get toward the current state of modernity. The following track, "Raoul," rehashes that vibe and, at least somewhat, the musicality, with a vocal refrain that mimics falling off a cliff. "Smart World" would fit nicely on Devo's Freedom of Choice (there's a clear Devo influence throughout their career) while "摆烂 Bai Lan" switches the record's flow just a bit, allowing for the lead vocalist "Austin" (the band keeps their identities a secret and perform in costumes) to shout a little louder and preach a little longer. Final song "Closely Observed" offers a break from the onslaught; it progresses toward a blaring crescendo that descends into a long ambient fade out to close the record. Hard Times Furious Dancing calls out the misfortune of the have-nots and struggling masses while offering a solid mode of resistance: scream and dance yourself sweaty. It's triumphant, intense and truthful. © Jeff Laughlin
