In 2021, the future of indie rock band Great Grandpa was uncertain. After beginning work on a follow-up to their acclaimed 2019 album Four of Arrows, life pulled the five members—longtime friends from Seattle—in different directions. By 2023, however, they reunited with fresh perspectives and chose to start over, scrapping previous recordings to create something more authentic. The result is Patience, Moonbeam—an emotionally rich, sonically adventurous album that captures both the distance and the deep connection between its members.
Unlike their previous album, which was produced under pressure with external help, Patience, Moonbeam was shaped slowly and organically, with band member Dylan Hanwright leading production and mixing. The record reflects a collaborative, open creative process where all five voices contribute, and long-time signatures—Pat Goodwin’s unconventional song structures and Al Menne’s evocative vocals—are joined by new songwriting dynamics and emotional depth.
The 11-track album explores the extremes of life with songs swinging between the heavy and delicate, playful and profound. Tracks like “Doom,” “Kiss the Dice,” and “Never Rest” highlight the band’s love for contrast and complexity. At its core is the poignant lead single “Kid,” written in the wake of a personal loss and carrying the album’s central message: all good things in time define their meaning.
Patience, Moonbeam stands as a testament to Great Grandpa’s bond—more than a band, they are chosen family. After a period of separation, they’ve come into sync again, crafting a thoughtful, triumphant album that proves some things are worth waiting for.
