The New York Jazz Guitar Ensemble is the brainchild of guitarist Bob Ward, who created it after jamming with four fellow guitarists over a period of time. They had been playing together for three years by the time of these bop-oriented studio sessions, so egos are checked at the door as cooperation is the order of the day. The leader and Bob Bickford are the featured soloists in a cooking take of "Wes' Tune," while Peter Leitch and Scott Hardy shine in an elegant treatment of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." Paul Meyers, the only soloist in "Speak Like a Child," is also an accomplished musician. Only Leitch has made much of a mark in jazz during the years following the 1985 release of this Choice LP, but there's not a disappointing track on this now unavailable album.~Ken Dryden
