Audio quality is exemplary. String sound is nicely textured & reflects the participation of multiple musicians playing a single part, rather than 1 mega-violin. Winds are naturally recessed behind the strings & there’s a wonderful sense of the recording venue, especially when a musical silence follows a loud orchestral chord. Dynamics are good, though some may want more impact to timpani strokes.
As for the performances? They probably won’t supplant an experienced listener’s favourites. But someone who had never heard a Beethoven symphony, yet knew of the music by its reputation, would quickly understand what all the fuss is about, intuiting the unique character of each work: the mastery of Classical-era: the message of noble human purpose that permeates the 9th. The Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra plays modern instruments yet there are plenty of nods to period practice. Beautiful woodwind playing abounds. The small string section assures clean passagework & excellent string/wind balances. Wojciech Rajski takes an approach that’s sensitive but never fussy. Tempo choices are very well judged. There’s an intimate quality to these readings that is very involving.
Wojciech Rajski guides us through the utterly inexhaustible wealth of ideas, energetic & sensitive, humorous & dancelike, with dazzling elegance, bringing out details that have not been heard before. Indulgence without pathos. The full cycle of 9 symphonies, developed over a period of 10 years, began in 2005 in Sopot (Poland) & ended with the 9th Symphony in summer 2015 in St. John's Church, Gdańsk. The original impetus for the whole project lay in the desire for the 1st recording of the Beethoven symphonies in Real Surround Sound. As a result, until now there has been no CD version: instead there has been only SACD or DVD-Audio. But Rajski's Beethoven features musical qualities which can't be denied to "normal" CD & stereo listeners
