Brighton’s Ellis Dickson has been making a name for himself as a formidable live performer as ELLiS-D, having spent a few weeks last summer supporting London’s Fat Dog on their Euro tour. Now out with his second EP, Spill, the Brightonian one-man band is channeling the gothic punk of Echo and the Bunnymen and the rockabilly fuzz of a Charlie Megira into a paranoid, post-punk freneticism all his own. “Oh no, I’m living in the comfort of my shadow/ My shadow” Dickson wails on the feverish, seven and a half minute “Drifting,” his vocals writhing and contorting itself from a strained hush to an histrionic bark. “Homecoming Queen” opens with an amusing “One, two, buckle my shoe” before evolving into a tortured, mid-century-style ballad. The neurotically unspooling “Humdrum,” meanwhile, finds Dickson pleading “I want to be your slave” in a David Byrne-meets-Lux Interior fashion. Selfishly, I hope that a U.S. tour is on the horizon for this Brighton band.
