This album is entirely made up of cover versions and was conceived as a tribute to three of Butler’s musical idols — Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Jesse Belvin. Most of the tracks are Cooke’s songs, but the most intriguing is the cover of “I've Been Loving You Too Long,” a song usually associated with Otis Redding. Interestingly, Butler co-wrote the track, which adds a layer of depth when comparing the different versions.

The album opens with an unexpected addition — “Never Give You Up,” written by Butler himself in collaboration with Gamble and Huff. The song had previously been released as a single on Mercury, and the label added it to the album in hopes of boosting sales. The album begins with a short spoken monologue from Butler — a kind of musical prelude expressing his respect for soul music legends.
