This album began in 2008.
One night I had a weird and vivid dream, where Federico Garcia Lorca was talking to me. I had not been familiar with his work at that point; still in the dream, we were having a nice chat.
Waking up, I had two words throbbing in my brain, “Amargo Amarillis”.
I got up and went to a book shop. It wasn’t a problem to find there a bilingual book of Lorca’s poetry – in Spanish, with a parallel Russian translation. Opening it, I was amazed to discover a poem called Diálogo de Amargo.
After that, about 35 tracks were composed, of which a bit less than a half ended up on the album. Some Russian translations sounded just spot on, so we decided to keep them in three songs, while the rest of the album was sung in the poems’ original language.
It was clear that the main instrument in the album should be the guitar, however it took years to find the right guitarists, since Caprice had never played guitar music before.
In 2022, five years after we began recording Amargo, the whole album concept was flipped upside down. The first and penultimate tracks, Muerte pequeña and Diálogo de Amargo were removed and three new tracks were composed instead, Veleta, Amargo amarillis and Nadie comprendía.
All in all, the album took 16 years – almost half of Lorca’s life – to be written and seven years to be recorded and mixed. Five other Caprice albums were released (and six recorded) during that period.
Amargo was recorded made in six professional studios and five home studios, and is a collective effort of 20 musicians, making it Caprice’s longest and biggest work so far.
