Dorie is already well known for her work as backing vocalist with Chris Difford, Francis Dunnery, William Topley, Marti Pellow and as one of the joint lead singers for prog rock band Kaprekar’s Constant. She has
also been steadily developing her own solo career creating a demand to hear more of her in her own right.
This second album allows her to further explore her virtuosity as a lead vocalist and vocal arranger. Her intricate, multi-tracked harmonies feature prominently on all of the twelve tracks that make up this album.
Dorie has recently finished vocal backing on the forthcoming Chris Difford album which also features Ewan McColl’s son, Neill. She has sung with Ed Sheeran’s co-writer, Amy Wadge, Duke Special and Maggie Reilly.
Kaprekar's Constant’s core writing team has worked alongside Dorie and also number amongst the backing musicians. The band’s Mike Westergaard has recently made two folk albums for Evolution Media Music and also produced and mixed Stupid Says Run.
It was especially important to Dorie that her father, David, added his unique touch to the music. One of the most important figures of 1970’s progressive rock, David weaves flute, horns and whistles throughout the
album.
As might be expected, the band’s trademark storytelling narrative is evident throughout. Dorie steers the listener through topics as diverse as insomnia, folklore, myths and legends and losing a loved one to
dementia. All sit happily alongside tales of historical endeavours, cover ups, dirty dealing and even the Boer War.
Dorie’s clear, alto voice sets the scene and atmosphere of each song, delivering both the more folky themes of some tracks and the full-on, orchestral arrangements of others. They merge rock, folk and prog and other flavours in between.
The album also features a guest appearance on several tracks by Toby Shaer on fiddle and low whistle. Toby is a regular member of Cara Dillon a influences into a multi textured, multi layered sound as they move seamlessly from a happy jaunt on one track to dark, threatening foreboding on and Sam Lakeman’s touring band and one of the top, young players on the folk circuit.
