Tibor Varga’s earliest violin lessons were from his father and Carl Flesch, and he made his debut at the age of 10 performing the Mendelssohn concerto. He was swiftly taken under the wing of the elderly Jeno Hubay at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, where he encountered Bartók. After World War II, Varga performed widely as a violin virtuoso. He moved to England in 1947; founded the Tibor Varga Chamber Orchestra in Detmold, Germany, in 1954; then moved to Switzerland, where he was based the rest of his life. His repertoire covered baroque, classical and romantic works, but he was also known for his performances of modern composers such as Berg Schoenberg and Stravinsky.
