Review
clipping. fit so idiosyncratically into the hip-hop landscape that it can be a riot to try and pin down their touchpoints. Is Daveed Diggs' blunt, swift-tongued delivery a relative of vintage Ice-T or the even quicker Tech N9ne? At least the concept of the L.A. group's fifth record pairs perfectly with a sound they've always whittled away at: art-terrorist noise finally giving way from Einstürzende Neubauten's vision of industrial clang to Front 242's. "Run It" and "Keep Pushing" are monsoons of burping TB-303 synths that define this phase of their squelchy rap mutations, though the group who found a way to rhyme over an excruciating alarm clock beep on their debut album also kicks off Dead Channel Sky by spitting over a dial-up connection.
The sonics on their first outing in five years usually find some way to vacillate between the two, and end up with some of their most listenable tracks thus far. "Code" is one such highlight, crushing J-Kwon's "Tipsy" beat (a song they once successfully covered) to digital bits and layering it with unusually tender strings before the next barrage shrieks in. The corroded nuggets of glitch that interrupt the boom-bap in "Scams" will make earbuds feel like robotic spiders crawling into your ear canals.
Speaking of hyperactive sound design, the trio's love of electronic '90s IDM is all over Dead Channel Sky, too. The history-flattening Squarepusher tribute "Ask What Happened" may be their most explicitly political meltdown—if you can keep up with its blinding sprint. "Dodger" is a vision of a rapper viewing the crashing drill 'n' bass of Aphex Twin's Drukqs as a challenge to rap over. More than ever, clipping. have learned to make the negative space in each bar feel as menacing and inventive as the gadgets that interrupt it. As for their concepts, like the extended anti-nostalgia metaphor "Polaroids," how about vintage Aesop Rock? Oh look, he's here too. © Daniel Aaron
