Weird Herald was a folk-rock/psychedelic band from Los Gatos, California, with deep ties to Moby Grape and the 1960s South Bay music scene. Featuring guitarists Billy Dean Andrus and Paul Ziegler, the band blended haunting folk harmonies, country-tinged melodies, and energetic hard rock, drawing comparisons to Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds.
Their only known release was a rare 1968 promo 45, but their planned full album was shelved due to management issues, with master tapes rumored to be destroyed. However, reel-to-reel copies survived with the Andrus family for over 50 years and are now being released.
Billy Dean Andrus, a close friend of Skip Spence, died of a drug overdose in 1970, inspiring tribute songs by Hot Tuna and The Doobie Brothers. Paul Ziegler later joined Hot Tuna and passed away in 2000.
