The Oklahoma native, but now Dallas resident tells the story of his musical journey which began when he played with Sam Myers, The Texas Blues Guitar Summit with Anson Funderburgh and Mike Morgan, Susan Tedeschi and many others. He released his first album in 1998 and his current album, his sixteenth came together in a studio in Bonn, Germany. Shawn plays the guitar and vocals with Erkan Özdemir on bass, and Levent Özdemir on drums and backing vocals, In addition Simon Oslender on the Hammond organ and Roel Spanjers on piano and organ play on a few tracks each. Shawn comes roaring out of the gate and advises her that he will wait for her “Until The Time Is Right”. He says, “First thing is fighting all the time, you get mad then I cross the line the “Damage Is Done” as he keeps the rock going. He slows things down as he acknowledges “The first time I met you, you told me a lie. The second time I met you I had to give you a ride. I’m paying all your bills and your mother’s too...I’m going to “Add it Up”. Roel’s accordion and piano is featured in “Heartbreak in East Dallas” as he moves into Doug Sahm territory. Mark Kazanoff on tenor sax and John Mills on baritone sax (the Texas horns) guests on the soulful “Blame it On Me”, which continues the Sir Douglas Texas-styled blues. “Tabletop” is a rocking instrumental with Simon’s organ blending with a solo from Shawn. He says he does not want to feel “Low No More” as he brings a little boogie into the mix. “Countin’ Them Days” lets Shawn and Simon shine again. He slows things down again to discuss “My Journey” as he notes “heartache is my best friend” and launches into a soaring guitar solo. “Somebody Gonna Lose, Somebody Gonna Win” was written by Lewis Dickson as Shawn questions “How long must I go down this lonesome road, bad luck and trouble my only sin?” He closes the album with a cover of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”. In his liner notes, Shawn says “I think this album might just be my favorite of them all”. It is certainly an excellent album. Shawn’s guitar and soulful vocals are outstanding.
