Pramod Kumar was one of the most gifted Indian sitarists of the emerging generation in the 1970s. A disciple of Ravi Shankar, he had the potential to achieve fame alongside greats like Vilayat Khan and Nikhil Banerjee, but his premature death at 45 in 1983 prevented wider recognition. His highly personal style and innovative approach to sitar playing, emphasizing lyrical expression and unique tonal qualities, set him apart.
His discography was limited, but a rare recording, originally released in 1972 under the title Fantastique Musique Indienne!, has been reissued on CD by Ocora (Radio France). This album features Kumar accompanied by a young Zakir Hussain on tabla. The recording showcases Raga Madhuvanti (typically played in the late afternoon) and Raga Kirwani (suited for nighttime), both set to uncommon rhythmic cycles.
Pramod Kumar’s approach was distinctive—he used deeper resonating strings and minimized the use of rhythmic drone strings (chikaris), opting for a more pure and resonant sound. His mastery of rhythm was influenced by his background in tabla and kathak dance, a skill recognized by Ravi Shankar, who later acknowledged Kumar as one of his finest disciples.
The reissue, though lacking bonus tracks and running only 41 minutes, provides a rare opportunity to rediscover Pramod Kumar’s artistry. It reaffirms his place in Indian classical music, restoring a forgotten yet remarkable sitarist to deserved recognition after decades of obscurity.
