A 3-CD boxed set from three great musicians. Follow up to the Juno-nominated "Where Old Friends Meet"!

Mose Scarlett, Jackie Washington, and Ken Whiteley team up to bring you a tasty selection of swing, blues, gospel, folk, and original material. This is a special 3-CD boxed set made up of "The Fundamental Things" (Mose Scarlett), "Keeping Out of Mishief" (Jackie Washington), and "Acoustic Eclectic" (Ken Whiteley). Each of the "friends" appears on the others' albums, along with a score of musical guests.

From old classics like "Take the 'A' Train" or "Stardust" to little-known treasures like "The Moon is a Silver Dollar" to original songs like "Family Tree," this set sparkles with swing, freshness, and originality.

Featuring Jay McShann, Jerry Douglas, Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer, Evan Price, Chris Whiteley, George Koller, Victor Bateman, John Sheard, Bucky Berger, Jackie Richardson, David Wall, Amoy Levy, and more.

In 1991, these three Toronto-based musical journeymen released "Where Old Friends Meet," a highly-acclaimed, Juno-nominated recording. This is the follow-up release that their fans have been waiting for. However, once in the studio their hundred years of combined playing experience bubbled over and they ended up doing three separate albums (although they all appear on each others' releases).

Mose Scarlett, who specializes in songs from the 1920's-1940's, has a wonderful deep baritone, and a powerful manner on the finger-picked guitar. Scarlett's release includes a nice concert section, which squeezes yet more life out of old numbers like "Big Bad Bill" and "Sheik of Araby," and illustrates the energy of his stage show.

Jackie Washington is a veteran of blues and swing, who also chooses most of his repertoire from the 1920's and 1930's. Solid on the piano and guitar, and with a smoky voice that fits the material, he also invites whole horn sections to sit in with him on a few tracks. Despite the album titles, you can hear the mischief in his voice on tracks such as "Foolish Questions."

Ken Whiteley's choice of material ranges from gospel to swing to original songs of love and ancestors (11 of the 16 tracks are originals.) He plays almost a dozen instruments in his usual eclectic manner. A high spot is his version of "Bright Morning Star," complete with a sitar backing.

...Any way you buy them, these three releases represent Scarlett, Washington, and Whiteley in fine form. -- Dirty Linen, August/September '96 #65

This is easily one of the finest acoustic roots releases of the year... It's a labour of love from three friends with eclectic tastes and wide experience in various roots forms, almost overwhelming in its riches. Mose Scarlett, Jackie Washington, and Ken Whiteley were already proven collaborators for their acclaimed 1991 album "Where Old Friends Meet"... The sheer invention spans swing, blues, and jazz on lesser-known chestnuts, with the odd gospel number to fill things out... The discs are available individually but you'll probably want the whole set in the end, because eve though they all stand marvellously well on their own they fit together like musical siblings. -- Edmonton Journal, Sunday, December 10, 1995
