Album review

As its title suggests, this third album from British band Pale Blue Eyes is all about the seismic personal shifts that come with moving to a New Place. In twelve tracks, Matt and Lucy Board, the couple at the heart of this Totnes trio's songwriting, track their move from Devonshire's coastal pastures to the urban industrialism of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. "The album arrives on the back of extensive and emotional transit, a record of time reflecting on a lifetime of memories— but now beside a world of new beginnings," explains Matt Board in New Place's release notes.

The standout opening track, "How Long is Now," reflects exactly that. Kicking off with their trademark rhythmic synths and modernist pop melodies, the layers continue to build into an optimistic and expansive lift-off, establishing a fuller and more confident sound than the album's predecessors. It's the perfect evocation of the excitement and overwhelming feeling of being in a new city.

At the same time, an array of musical influences in these songs chart a path through the history of British alt-rock, from the infectious New Wave bassline on "Half Light" to the shoegaze ethereality of "The Dreamer" to the modern indie-rock guitar riffs of "Pieces of You." All the while, a consistent Krautrock influence ties its driving rhythms to the German-inspired electric dynamism of British post-punk. The lyrics floating over the top of the propulsive "Travel Day" say it best: "the past and present collide" as Pale Blue Eyes' magnetic blend of nostalgia and futurism has been injected with added hope and a bustling sound, befitting of their new home in Sheffield. © Ciara Rivers
