Canadian singer-songwriter Lynn Rosenblood’s last album, “Circus”, was significantly impacted by the Covid pandemic, which she described as “fucking depressing.” She expressed uncertainty about the album, saying, “I have no idea if it was the right record. I’ve yet to experience any feedback from it.”
Seeking solace, she retreated to the mountains and began writing new material, creating demos using GarageBand. In October 2023, she divided her time between British Columbia and Los Angeles to produce her latest album, which features seven self-penned tracks and runs for twenty-eight minutes.
The album includes contributions from band members Jesse Lee on guitar, Julian Bradford on bass, Jason Brinkworth on drums, and Rahj Levension on synthesizer. Their support perfectly complements her songs.
Lynn reminisced about her early musical influences: “My earliest memory of digging music hard was my grandmother and my mum singing together. I thought it was so loud and they were screaming. I had headphones attached to a turntable playing Carole King’s “Tapestry” – and I remember thinking, now this is music!” Her musical heritage is rich, with her great-grandfather being a piano player for silent movies in Hollywood, her grandmother a classical opera singer, and her mother having a long career with the Canadian Opera Company. Her father, an English professor, shared his love of jazz and poetry with her. Lynn also has experience as a radio producer and on-air personality in Toronto, and she has done voice-overs for radio.
Her light, raggedy vocals, reminiscent of Melanie, and her undeniable songwriting talent shine through on tracks like “Wolfcry,” “Tail Of A Hawk,” and “Jacaranda’s.” The album opener “Away,” the lead single “Monsters,” “You Are Here,” and the rocking “Stand In The River” are sure to be crowd-pleasers in intimate venues when she takes the album on the road this year.
