The Men - Buyer Beware (2025) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: The Men

Album review

The Men first burst on the scene with a bang in 2010 with Immaculada, causing a buzz in punk, DIY and indie scenes all at once with their noisy, psychedelic sound. Since then, the prolific band has evolved in and out of the different strains of rock—toying with Dinosaur Jr.-isms, dabbling in Grateful Dead, going full Neil Young—all while flirting with life as a full-time touring band, and juggling the accolades and the damnation that comes with the "indie darling" moniker.

In the days during and since the pandemic, The Men seem to be trying to make up for lost time—releasing three LPs in the past two years, including their latest LP, Buyer Beware. As with any hyper-prolific artist, the first concern is quality control but the band has consistently released good if not great material. And while the music has varied, The Men kept one foot firmly in garage punk territory, avoiding the aggressiveness of early albums for something a tad more melodic, fun, and frankly more memorable.

Buyer Beware rides along the path that The Men have followed for over the last few releases—part bar-rocker, some T. Rex, a bit of Cheap Trick and Stones-like melodic touches, and maybe most importantly, some Replacements. Just like Paul Westerberg and co, The Men's explosive take on punk feels like it's teetering on a thin edge towards subsidence but instead ends with a highly memorable, riffy good time. With second single, "PO Box 96," though, The Men fly close Immaculada's snarl, a sentiment matched by the almost D-beat nature of "Control." But that contrasts starkly with the last four tracks, whose aesthetic aligns with the punky, power-pop of first single "Pony."

The Men are so consistently consistent that it is understandable why they get glossed over in favor the shiny new band dangled in front of the modern indie rock fan. The only thing Buyer Beware about this record is its red herring title. © Fred Pessaro
