Long Tall Jefferson - old sun, new horizon (2025) [Hi-Res]

"old sun, new horizon," the fourth full-length album from Zürich-based singer-songwriter Long Tall Jefferson, shows a deep love for life. The full scope of it: the triumphantly glowing yellow and the deep dark blue. The humdrum of the day-to-day and the cosmic spectacle of it all when you find a minute to zoom out just a tiny bit – or a whole bunch, for that matter. It’s an uplifting album chock-full of sticky, dreamy tunes that oscillate between Indie Folk and Lo-Fi Pop, seasoned with beautiful patches of melancholy.

We started recording shortly after my second daughter was born. Everything was overwhelming at that time. Music was just one of many aspects of my life. Yet, it gave me these short breaks in which I could just be an artist and really commit to my craft no matter what's happening at home. – Long Tall Jefferson

For the production of "old sun, new horizon," Long Tall Jefferson sought a raw, honest sound and brought in his longtime friend and multi-instrumentalist Mario Hänni as co-producer. To capture the lightness and vulnerability of demo recordings, they always recorded two instruments at the same time: first two guitars, then bass and drums, followed by additional overdubs. This approach left plenty of room for happy accidents and improvisation. With a collection of 20 recordings, they went into Manuel Egger's studio, where they refined and narrowed them down to the 11 songs that now appear on the album.

To me, the 'old sun' is this fixture, something immutable burning within me – my love for songwriting, for music, my soul, this endless fascination with life. And then, the ‘new horizon’ is all the wonderful things surrounding and challenging me: new perspectives, change.

Think of this album as a box of postcards, messages written with a light pen, casual and intimate in tone. Playful, on occasion surreal or even cryptic, but always underscored with a strong emotion: love, grief, hope, melancholy, time, the creative process, growing up. A hall of mirrors that invites the listener to reflect on the themes in the songs through their own experience. And, suddenly, you’re thinking about infinity.
