Mainz-born oboist Juri Vallentin has already won many international prizes, including the St. Petersburg International Tchaikovsky Competition, which he was the first oboist ever to win. On February 28, he is now releasing RUSH, his fourth album to date, which is also his debut on the Berlin Classics label. The album combines baroque with pop. Juri Vallentin and the North German ensemble reflektor cover an enormously broad spectrum.
Juri Vallentin persistently searches for ways to make classical repertoire come alive in a new way and to place it in a contemporary context. His new album focuses on baroque works by Alessandro Marcello (1673-1747), Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), the Italian oboist and composer Giovanni Benedetto Platti (1697-1763) and the French composer and cellist Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729). These works are contrasted with three contemporary titles: two cleverly arranged pieces by pop greats: Sam Smith (Unholy) and Billie Eilish (Everything I wanted) as well as an original composition by Juri Vallentin (VORTEX - cadenza for RUSH). The contemporary works appear like incisions, the effect of which Juri Vallentin describes as rays of bright neon light on deep blue velvet. For him, they are luminous pillars that radiate onto the other works. One of the many reciprocal relationships between baroque and contemporary repertoire that we encounter many times on this album.
The double concerto for two oboes by Vivaldi, for example, for which Juri Vallentin enlisted his friend, the South American oboist Sergio Sanchez, has almost pop-like characteristics due to its rhythmic patterns and catchy harmonies. A dynamic that is reflected in the two pop tracks "Unholy" and "Everything I wanted". It is no coincidence that Juri Vallentin sought out music for his album with thematic motifs that are reflected in the baroque world and vice versa. "That wasn't so easy, after all the themes from the present and the baroque period are far apart. But you can find them: Billie Eilish's song is about vulnerability and especially also about an inner world. The song 'Unholy' is about guilt and hidden desires. These are very human - timeless - themes that also played a role in the Baroque period and moved and inspired people," explains Juri Vallentin. The sensitive arrangements of both pop titles were written by him.
The album begins with the demanding G minor concerto by Platti, whose energetic and virtuoso music inspired Juri Vallentin to write the album title. He explains: "The word RUSH also carries the meaning of intoxication. This indulgence in virtuosity, in ornamentation. It seemed to me a nice associative title that speaks to both the old and the new". While in the context of the Baroque era, intoxication describes artistic ornamentation and emotional depth, in the present it stands more for creative freedom and crossing boundaries.
In the tradition of composing instrumentalists such as Platti, who demonstrated their skills in their own works, Juri Vallentin has composed the work "VORTEX - cadenza for RUSH". He created his solo piece for oboe especially for this album. It is a kind of link between the modern pieces on the album, as it takes up motifs from both pop titles.
Founded in Hamburg in 2015, ensemble reflektor is committed to new performance concepts and stylistically diverse programs. This makes it the ideal partner for this album. Juri Vallentin has a similar approach to music as the ensemble. Both look at baroque music from the here and now, allowing themselves to be mutually inspired. "I am always on the lookout for these connections. Classical music has the problem that its repertoire is finite. But this also gives rise to the attraction of constantly creating new projects and tasks. Because somehow I don't want to position myself narrowly in this perpetual motion machine of the same old thing," says Juri Vallentin. With his album, the oboist breaks new ground and brings universal themes and emotional depth to life in different musical contexts. A fresh and courageous reinterpretation of classical music.
