In many ways, Jackson Browne is the quintessential sensitive California singer/songwriter of the early '70s. Only Joni Mitchell and James Taylor rank alongside him in terms of influence, but neither artist tapped into the post-'60s Zeitgeist quite like Browne. While the majority of his classic '70s work was unflinchingly personal, it nevertheless provided a touchstone for a generation of maturing baby boomers coming to terms with adulthood. Not only did his introspective, literate lyrics strike a nerve, but his laid-back folk-rock set the template for much of the music to come out of California during the 1970s. With his first four albums, Browne built a loyal following that helped him break into the mainstream with 1976's The Pretender. During the late '70s and early '80s, he was at the height of his popularity, with each of his albums charting in the Top Ten. In the latter half of the '80s, a series of political protest records alienated portions of his fan base, but a return to more introspective songwriting, beginning with 1993's I'm Alive, helped restore much of Browne's luster. Coinciding with his 2004 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was a retrospective period that yielded a popular anthology release and a series of stripped down acoustic live albums that celebrated his body of work. Keeping his finger on the pulse, Browne later returned to new material, successfully blending protest and personal material on late career highlights like 2008's Time the Conqueror and 2021's Downhill from Everywhere.
