The album Luohteniegut by Áššu, fronted by Finnish folk musician Ulla Pirttijärvi, brings the traditional yoik of the Sami into the present with heart and soul. The title means ‘dreams’ – many of the yoiks on the album appeared to Ulla in dreams and deal with animals, nature and close relationships with friends and family.
Joik is not an ordinary song, but an expression of Sami spirituality – you joik about things yourself, not about them. It is a sonic presence of nature and emotions, deeply rooted in Sami culture.
Ulla's close musical companions are represented on Luohteniegut, including her brother Keijo (reindeer herder), her relative Ursula and the Norwegian musician Hildegunn Øiseth, who can be heard on several tracks with her goat horn.
The band Áššu consists of:
Ulla Pirttijärvi (joik)
Kenneth Ekornes (percussion)
Olav Torget (guitar, konting, electronic sounds, vocals)
Ulla was previously a member of Angelin Tytöt and later founded the band Solju with her daughter Hildá Länsman. Áššu's debut album (2019) was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize.
