A traveling companion of flautist Emilie Calmé, harmonica player Laurent Maur offers us this new album in a more dynamic aesthetic, we would say funk/jazz/electro. If we find of course the flautist and also Curtis Efoua, pianist Clément Simon comes to flesh out the formation, bringing his rhythm, his harmonies with notably a synth-bass.
Laurent and Emilie often tour in Asia where the harmonica player has even lived, in Seoul and Beijing. It is precisely in Beijing that the album was made, in two days between two concerts of a tour! DJ Uzul who mixed a few tracks put his mark on this album, giving it this electro color that is elegant and not invasive.
The album opens with a title already released on a previous album but which takes a new form here, it is "Plagall Boléro" enhanced with electro effects around the sound of the leader's midi harmonica reminiscent of the bandoneon. A very successful tonic version.
The title "Dark Reverie" is a tribute to Sugar Blue, a sample of which is taken from "My Baby Caught the Train"; we can hear it starting at the beginning. We find there what the album is made of, this contrast between the nervous groove of the drum rhythm, synth-bass and the lightness of the flute and harmonica; the signature of this Soundscape quartet.
Clément Simon also plays the piano of course, notably for his free introduction of "Ombre et Lumière" a title already recorded on the album "Vin Doux" but here in a very cool soul version. The harmonica offers its volutes to which those of the flute respond.
If all the compositions are by Laurent Maur, only one escapes the rule, "Californois" which was written by Curtis Efoua who with a very syncopated groove transports us to California.
A title in reference to Beijing, a city that is dear to Laurent and Emilie, concludes the album in an airy way, "Rain over Beijing", it is time to move on to dreams, gentle this time.
Does this album mark a turning point in Laurent Maur's beautiful career? The future will tell us but it is already a great success.
