Açış is a free-rhythm musical design in the traditional music of Turkey, in which the performer of any instrument can express creativity by liberating themselves within certain rules. The rules mentioned here can vary depending on the purpose for which açış is used. For example, if the açış is intended to prepare for an uzun hava or a rhythmic piece of music, it must definitely reflect the musical structure or the character of the work. Some performers prefer to revoke the melody exactly, while others, in principle, prefer to give themselves more freedom considering it is sufficient to get the audience to hear the similar melody of the piece of music concerned. If the açış to be performed is not for the purpose of preparing for a piece of music, then the performer gives themself more freedom to improvise depending on the flow of the maqam they will perform. While açış liberates the performer, it also puts them at a greater risk. The instrumentalist who embraces the açış will be successful only to the extent that they can incorporate their technical competence on the instrument, their musical background, experience, imagination and enthusiasm at that moment into their performance with great concentration to meet the challenge.
This album entitled ‘‘Açış’’ includes musical designs that I have composed or arranged incorporating the melodic structures we encounter in different regions of Anatolia and the nuances that show the musical character of those regions. I have been dreaming of this project for a long time and it is very exciting to finally share these works containing all the diverse colours of the bağlama with you. I hope this music from my heart will also touch your hearts.
