The Montgomery Clifts, a band formed in 1986, gained a strong live reputation, local press coverage, and major label interest. Initially a four-piece, they expanded in 1989 with multi-instrumentalist Bill Bell (ex-Blue Aeroplanes). Signed to Sheffield independent label Native, they appeared on the Guitars+Drums compilation before releasing their album in November 1990. Recorded in Fulham with producer Ian Shaw, the album featured contributions from Richard Bell, Karin Taylor, and artist Celia Witchard. It received praise from NME and Melody Maker and received BBC and Capital Radio airplay. The band played their final gig in October 1992 at The Mauretania.
