The brilliance of Mitsuko Uchida's live performances, which resonated in Japan during the Mozart Year

The recording of the combination of pieces that Uchida, who knew Mozart's works inside out, had carefully prepared was handled by Wilhelm Herveg, the chief producer of Philips at the time, and the famous engineer Ono Skoltz.

The unprecedented performance that was highly acclaimed in the Mozart Year of 1991 has been made into a Super Audio CD hybrid.

Mitsuko Uchida, who was born in Atami in 1948, went to Europe when she was 12 years old in 1961 and studied at the Vienna Music Academy.

She steadily won prizes in competitions, including third prize at the 1966 Munich International, tenth prize at the 1968 Queen Elisabeth, first prize at the 1969 Vienna Beethoven, and second prize at the 1970 Chopin International, and in 1971 she made her London debut with a concert at the Wigmore Hall.

In 1972, he moved his base to London and focused his activities on Europe, but he was unable to gain recognition and continued to record only a small number of albums in Japan.

The turning point came in 1982, when he gave a series of recitals of Mozart's piano sonatas at the Wigmore Hall. His fresh interpretations were highly praised by London critics and in 1984 he conducted the English Chamber Orchestra in a performance of all of Mozart's piano concertos, further cementing his reputation.

The Philips label, which had taken notice of Uchida, began recording all of the piano sonatas in October 1983.

As soon as the sonatas were completed in February 1985, he began recording the complete piano concertos in October of the same year, completing the recordings in February 1990.

As if to match his success in the recording studio, Uchida's performance career in Europe and America took off, and in 1984 he made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic under Seiji Ozawa. Since then, he has been invited to perform at regular concerts with major orchestras in Europe and America, as well as at world music festivals such as Salzburg, the Proms, and Lucerne.

In the process, Mozart's works became the trademark of “Uchida of the World”.

Uchida's style, which is extremely emotional but does not simply rely on inspiration or emotion, but creates performances based on detailed musical thought, was truly fresh and captivated audiences around the world.

In 1991, the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death, as Mozart's works were being performed around the world, Mitsuko Uchida, who had just finished recording sonatas and concertos, was also given the opportunity to perform her interpretation of Mozart on the world stage, including a five-night piano sonata cycle at New York's was given the task of performing a five-evening piano sonata cycle at Lincoln Center in New York, and she was able to showcase her interpretation of Mozart on the world stage, further enhancing her reputation as a pianist.

Uchida came to Japan in May of that year, and in Japan he also held concerts consisting entirely of Mozart's works at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and The Symphony Hall in Osaka.

Three concerts were held at Suntory Hall, with the first (May 10th) featuring a combination of the 10th, 8th and 12th sonatas, the Fantasia in D minor and the 17th sonata, the second (May 12th) featuring the 5th and 18th sonatas, variations on “Pilgrimage to Mecca” , Rondo in D minor, Sonata No. 17, and on the third day (May 17th), Sonata No. 15, Fantasia in C minor, Sonata No. 14, Variations on “The Pilgrimage to Mecca”, and Sonata No. 18. Uchida, who knows Mozart's works inside out, had carefully selected these pieces for the program.

Both Disc 1 and Disc 2 begin with a fantasy piece, and each disc contains two sonatas and two piano pieces, making for a satisfying combination with a good contrast between the pieces.

All of the performances at Suntory Hall over the three days and at The Symphony Hall during that time were recorded live by Philips Records in the Netherlands at the time, and this disc is a compilation of four sonatas and five piano works selected from those recordings and released on two CDs in Japan before anywhere else in the world.

Uchida is known for his love of listening to recordings by past performers, and he places particular importance on the act of recording. He basically records in sessions, and his principle is to build up his recordings meticulously by taking multiple takes.

It was a bold move for Uchida to record his recital live, even in the midst of the Mozart Year.

This two-disc album is permeated with his conviction and confidence, and it clearly records the emotions that change from moment to moment, which is different from the session recordings of the 1980s.

The songs are arranged in a different order to the recital, but you can clearly see that the characteristics of each song and the contrast between them have been carefully considered.
In a later interview, Uchida spoke highly of Suntory Hall, saying, “It's my favorite hall. It's one of my top three. The sound is the best of all.” It seems as if even Uchida's feelings are engraved in this live recording.
