His history in this music, as practitioner and witness, went beyond what many knew about him. He was in the tradition of musicians with extensive history who found a voice in creative expression. He was my mentor and friend, very encouraging. The time I spent with him, for close to thirty years, is a major component of my own musical engagement. I was honored to play for his spirit with my favorite fellow travelers, in an appropriate send off.
