The Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 1 has remained one of the best loved and most often performed and recorded trios in the repertoire. The London Piano Trio Robert Atchison, violin, Olga Dudnik, piano and David Jones, cello bring their artistry and musicality to this masterpiece. This is a performance of passion and deeply felt love for the music coupled with technical brilliance tempered with a deep understanding of Mendelssohn's music. This premier recording of Henry Cotter Nixon's Piano Trio No. 1 from 1879 is another example of the myth that no British music of worth was composed between Handel and Elgar. Although influenced by the Germanic musical culture of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn the melody opening the andante is an example of the late Victorian Anglican hymn. This recording follows the London Piano Trio's recording of Donald Tovey's Piano Trio Opus 27 on the Guild Music label GMCD 7352 strengthening their commitment to British music.
