The word "bohemian" has several meanings: it may denote a resident of the Czech region of Bohemia, a pre-hipster unconventional individual, or a member of the Bohemian Romani, a large subgroup of the people often termed Gypsies. All three meanings could apply to this recording by the ensemble Red Priest, which was named after Vivaldi's nickname and has specialized in unconventional arrangements of Baroque music, not only Vivaldi. Here the group, relying partly on arrangements by violinist Adam Summerhayes, investigates prominent and hidden Gypsy roots in Baroque music. The repertoire includes music by the already wildly adventurous Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, said to have had a Gypsy background, as well as a variety of dances that give recorder player Piers Adams the chance to strut his considerable high-speed chops. Authenticity is not even vaguely in sight here, and what you'll think of this probably depends on the idea of Red Priest that you've already formed, but there's a good sampling of the fun that has propelled Red Priest to the top of classical charts. Sample the little-known The Jews Dance, by early 17th century composer Richard Nicholson, and enjoy.
