This is not a collection of her greatest recordings; it is instead a culmination of everything Valente had done successfully earlier. It is a best-of collection, but these are re-recordings with new arrangements and backing. As such she and the orchestra get to correct a few things, adding punch and power where before there was a younger, more plaintive voice with just guitar. "Malagueña" (now in stereo) comes off with much of the power of her first album's version.
While not quite her best album, Greatest Hits does seem to have everything, particularly her trademark singing of standards in different languages, especially Spanish. "Besame Mucho" begins in English and Spanish, pleasantly and effectively enough. The closer, Xavier Cugat's wonderful "My Shawl," recalls Abbe Lane but with greater talent. Orchestra leader Werner Müller makes good use of congas and other percussion throughout, and the strings are rarely too intrusive. One could say it swings.
