The duality of the "human" is a theme that has been explored in art for centuries, from the writings of the Bible to Descartes to filmmakers like Lynch, Cronenberg and Carpenter. Who is the "real you" and what does it want?

With their sixth studio album "Wish Defense" (again on their longtime label Trouble In Mind Records), Chicago trio FACS take a long look in the mirror to face themselves. The return of original member Jonathan Van Herik - who left the group shortly before the release of their debut album "Negative Houses" in 2018 - in place of longtime bassist Alianna Kalaba brings new vigor and a distinct edginess to the band's more recent output.

The songs are still hard-hitting, but the approach is different - plus, the roles have changed since Van Herik's earlier time with Case and powerhouse drummer Noah Leger in Disappears; now on bass, Van Herik was originally the guitarist and featured as such on the debut, while current guitarist Brian Case played bass. This role reversal has been good for the band's dynamic, as it offers a different musical perspective than before and allows the trio's longtime collaboration to be rekindled with some distance and time.

Case notes that the lyrics on "Wish Defense" revolve around doppelgangers or "doubles" and deal with the idea of meeting oneself and observing one's ideas and motivations. The artwork of "Wish Defense" is a subtle nod to that of "Negative Houses", returning to its minimalism and black and white visuals. "Wish Defense" is the last album produced by Steve Albini. Two days were recorded at Electrical Audio in early May 2024 before Steve Albini passed away too soon. Renowned sound engineer and friend Sanford Parker stepped in to finish the session 24 hours later and record the final vocal tracks and overdubs. John Congleton mixed the album as Albini would have done: in Electrical Audio's A room, from tape, using Albini's notes about the session.
